Fifteen years ago today, Hubman and I stood up in front of about 100 people and took the following vows:
I, ASM, take you, Hubman, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow.
Hubman, I give you this ring as a symbol of my vow, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honor you, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Hubman is Episcopalian, and I joined the church since I was a very, very, lapsed Catholic, and Hubman had been a regular churchgoer, even volunteering as an acolyte (altar boy) during his teens.
And I can honeslty say, that fifteen years later, I am thrilled with how well we have done with our vows.
Our 'better(s)' have been dazzling, and thankfully our 'worse' has not been anything unsurmountable.
We had our poorer (Hubman got a Master's and PhD in the past fifteen years, and I did a Master's while working), but I am happy to report that going out to dinner does not include anyplace with a drive thru, and Chili's/TGI Fridays is not our idea of an extravagant night out any more :) While we can always use more money, and with the exception of Bill Gates, who can really say they couldn't. Thankfully there has been no sickness, with all that I am and all that I have, I love hubman and I know he feels the same about me.
We included a wedding picture for you all. I know that this is the most clothing you have ever seen on the two of us, but what the heck- it is a special day. I pulled the pictures out today to choose one for the blog, and I was struck at how young we look, which makes sense as we were 21 and 23 respectively. But we just looked so open, and trusting, and happy, which is how every couple should look on their wedding day, whether it is their 1st marriage or their 8th.
Hubman: First of all, to gauge the passage of years, compare the color and quantity of my hair in this photo to the photo from last weekend when ASM was baking DBs birthday cake and I have my face in her butt. Yikes!
Some people talk about how nervous they were on their wedding day. Not me! But there's a story to tell. I was going to spend the night before our wedding, planned for 1:00pm on a Sunday, at my dad's house. I pull into his driveway at 9:00pm Saturday night, get out of my car, and hear an odd hissing noise. I investigate and discover that one of the radiator hoses burst and the hissing is antifreeze pouring out of my car. Slight problem- this is our only car, and we plan on driving it on our honeymoon to the Poconos immediately after the reception Sunday afternoon! My dad and I spend Sunday morning finding an auto parts store that was open and had the part in stock and repairing it ourselves. I was too damned busy and stressed over the care to be nervous about my impending nuptials!
The wedding was fun. It was small, at least for my family a 100 person wedding was small. The Church was the one that hubman grew up in, and we had our reception at a local VFW that had a catering hall.
Looking back, my only regret is that we did not spend big bucks on the photos. If there is one lesson anyone planning a wedding should know is to spend big on the pictures!!!
We had a great reception with an open bar, and Hubman was gracious enough to let me get Cassata cake, which is my favorite, for the wedding cake. (Cassata cake is a sponge cake that has been brushed with rum, There are two fillings, a chocolate pudding type and then cannoli filling, with whipped cream frosting).
It was a wonderful day with friends and family, and while I feel joy while perusing the pictures, I also feel a glimmer of sadness for the relatives that are no longer with us anymore.
Besides the car mishap, we did have a few funny things about the wedding. The first was that the reception hall was built before the Americans with Disabilities Act, and somehow did not have a handicapped bathroom.
Normally this would not be a huge issue, unless you are wearing a huge puffy dress, and realize that you and your dress do not fit in the bathroom stalls. This led to not a lot of eating or drinking during the reception for me.
After the reception, we go back to the FIL's house so I can change and we open presents. We head off to our vacation at one of the Pocono Fuck Palaces (Ooops, Honeymoon resorts) and I am getting hungry, so I ask hubman if we can stop. Hubman is adamant that we are not eating McDonalds or any of its ilk on our wedding day, and we can get something at the resort. Anyway, when we get to the resort the kitchen is closed, but we get microwave pizza at the bar.
The lesson here is to make sure you and your dress can get into the bathroom, and if you are traveling on your big day, to pack snacks.
We get to the room, and get ready for bed. I come out in my trousseau wear, a long satiny gown with beading, and even though we are exhausted from the excitement of the day, we manage to consummate the marriage. This was probably helped by the fact that we abstained the week before.
Hubman: Yes, we briefly considered on our wedding night if we were too tired to fuck. Nope, not that tired :-)
Its been a good fifteen years for the most part. I am happy and so is hubman. We are fortunate in that we have a beautiful family and each other. We are hoping that each year is an expansion of the joy and love that we have for the other. I am truly blessed, and I frequently, and especially on our anniversary, thank the kind friend who dragged my ass to the keg party where I met hubman.
We sincerely hope that all of our readers have or find that same kind of love, as everyone deserves to love and be loved wholeheartedly.
As for this weekend, since my mom was too sick to come up this weekend our overnight trip without the kids was cancelled, but we are creative people with a babysitter booked for this evening, so I am sure we will come up with something.
And, as always, we will keep you posted.
Hubman: To quote one of my sports heroes "Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth". I feel that way every day I spend with ASM. My life would be incomplete without her. I hope each of you feels the same way about your partners.
